BATTERY SAFETY
Rechargeable batteries accepted for recycling are limited to consumer-sized, dry-cell Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead (Pb). Lead batteries must weigh under 2 lbs/1 kg. The RBRC program cannot recycle alkaline, lithium, wet-cell, or other non-rechargeable batteries for recycling. For other types of batteries not accepted in the RBRC program, please contact your local solid waste department.
Handle used rechargeable batteries with care. Depleted rechargeable batteries may still contain a residual charge. They can short-circuit and become hot if their terminals come in contact with another battery’s terminal during storage and shipping.
To minimize any risks, place ONE rechargeable battery, or cell phone with battery, per ONE plastic bag. Place each individual rechargeable battery or cell phone into a separate plastic bag. RBRC branded plastic bags can be found accompanying RBRC’s collection boxes. If plastic bags are unavailable, cover battery terminals with tape (electrical, duct, or masking) or seek assistance from store clerk.
Prior to placing used rechargeable battery or cell phone into collection box, please ensure there is only ONE rechargeable battery or ONE cell phone with battery, per bag. Please recycle only the types of rechargeable batteries accepted in the recycling program.
